The accidental expatriate blogger behind Field Stone Wave

Hi, I'm Sofia

I work as a project manager, a parent, and an expat based in Berlin, Germany.

A few years ago, I relocated here with my family. What started as a short-term contract gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.

How It Started

Moving to Germany wasn't part of the long-term plan. Like many expat relocations, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far more substantial.

The initial months were demanding — unfamiliar processes, new routines, and rising expectations. Daily tasks seemed more complex than they needed to be.

The Adjustment Period

There was culture shock, ambiguity, and plenty of learning by doing. But gradually routines took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt stable.

Why I Built Field Stone Wave

Most information online was either corporate relocation guidance or surface-level tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family perspective.

This site aims to close that gap — practical guidance drawn from real-life experience in Germany.

What This Site Is (And Isn't)

This site is:

  • Practical insights from living in Germany
  • Centered on family life and daily realities
  • Updated whenever a real change occurs

This site isn't:

  • A tourism authority resource
  • Not a paid-review platform
  • Not a generic travel blog

Looking Ahead

Our time in Germany goes on, and so does the learning process. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll continue documenting what we discover.

If you have questions about family life in Berlin or anywhere in Germany, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Warm regards,

Sofia
